Our Verdict

AlUla's most architecturally considered property — and the one most guests return to.

The integration with the canyon landscape is genuine, not cosmetic. Waking before dawn to sit on a terrace above ancient sandstone walls, with no sound, no light pollution, and the Milky Way directly overhead — this is what Banyan Tree AlUla is for.

The Architecture: Genuinely Built Into the Canyon

Banyan Tree AlUla's 47 villas are scattered across 47 square kilometres of the Ashar Valley — a scale that prevents the resort from feeling crowded, but also requires a buggy to move between the villa, the spa, and the restaurant. This is not a complaint. The distance between structures is a deliberate design decision: each villa sits in near-total isolation, with unobstructed views of canyon walls and open desert.

The villas use local Najdi architecture as their reference — flat roofs, rammed earth walls, narrow openings that control heat and light. The plunge pools are positioned to catch the morning light as it hits the eastern canyon face — the best view from any private pool in Saudi Arabia, by most accounts. At night, the absence of light pollution at this altitude (AlUla sits at approximately 800 metres) means the stargazing from a villa terrace is world-class.

Private Hegra Access: The Experience that Defines AlUla

The hotel arranges private access to Hegra — the Nabataean heritage site — at times when the general public is not present. This is the definitive AlUla experience and the primary reason many guests choose Banyan Tree specifically: the hotel's relationships with the Experience AlUla authority enable access windows that standard tour operators cannot offer.

A specialist archaeologist accompanies the private visit and explains the tombs in context — who they were built for, how the Nabataeans carved them from above (not from the base), the trade routes that made Hegra one of the wealthiest cities in the ancient world, and why the site was abandoned. Without this context, Hegra is beautiful. With it, it is transformative.

The Banyan Tree Spa: One of AlUla's Finest

The Banyan Tree Spa at AlUla draws on the brand's Thai wellness heritage but adapts treatments to the Saudi environment — desert plant extracts, local stone used in heated massage, and treatments designed for guests who have been outdoors in dry heat. The spa footprint is substantial, with multiple indoor and outdoor treatment pavilions and a thermal journey sequence that is among the most considered in the region.

A single 90-minute treatment is recommended as a minimum; the full half-day Rainmist experience (steam, thermal pool, full-body ritual) is the spa programme most frequently cited by returning guests as a standalone reason to revisit.

The Verdict vs Six Senses and The Chedi

AlUla has seven luxury hotels, and the choice between the top three depends on travel priorities. Banyan Tree is the best for guests who prioritise architectural immersion, private heritage access, and design integrity. Six Senses Southern Dunes is the better choice for wellness-focused travellers (biohacking, sleep programmes, transformational health). The Chedi AlUla is the best option for minimalist design enthusiasts who want a quieter, more contemplative experience.

All three are excellent. Banyan Tree has the broadest appeal and the most comprehensive programme of private experiences — it works for couples, design-conscious solo travellers, and those experiencing AlUla for the first time who want the full range of what the destination offers.

Winter at Tantora (December–March) is peak season and fills early. We recommend booking 3+ months in advance for that window.

Banyan Tree AlUla — Common Questions

How much does Banyan Tree AlUla cost per night?+

Banyan Tree AlUla rates start at approximately $800–$1,200 per night for standard villas, rising to $2,000–$3,000 for premium canyon-view categories and suites. Winter at Tantora season (December–March) commands the highest rates and books furthest in advance. Compared to the Red Sea island resorts, Banyan Tree represents strong value for the quality and uniqueness of the experience.

Can you see Hegra from Banyan Tree AlUla?+

Hegra (the UNESCO Nabataean heritage site) is approximately 20 minutes from Banyan Tree AlUla by private vehicle. The hotel arranges private after-hours Hegra access for guests — a guided visit at sunrise or sunset, without the presence of general public visitors. This is one of the most sought-after experiences in AlUla and should be booked in advance through the hotel concierge.

What is AlUla and why do people visit?+

AlUla is a 200km sandstone valley in northwestern Saudi Arabia — one of the oldest continuously inhabited landscapes on earth. It is home to Hegra, Saudi Arabia's first UNESCO World Heritage Site (111 Nabataean tombs carved from rose-gold sandstone, predating Petra). The valley's natural formations — Elephant Rock, the Ashar Canyon, ancient frankincense routes — are extraordinary by any standard. AlUla was inaccessible to international visitors until 2020.

What is the best time to visit AlUla and Banyan Tree?+

October to April is the ideal window — temperatures are 18–28°C during the day and cool at night. The Winter at Tantora festival (December–March) adds concerts, art, and cultural events to the region. Summer (June–September) is very hot (35–42°C) and most properties reduce their programmes. January and February offer the best combination of cool weather, festival events, and low humidity.
