What Makes Nujuma Different from Every Other Red Sea Resort

Nujuma is one of only seven Ritz-Carlton Reserve properties on earth. The Reserve collection is the brand's ultra-exclusive tier — properties where the ratio of guests to staff is kept extraordinary low, where each stay is assigned a single 'Kaimana' (personal host) who handles every request from first contact to departure, and where the property count is deliberately capped at a level that preserves genuine rarity. Nujuma has 63 villas. The St. Regis Red Sea has 90. The difference in scale creates a meaningfully different atmosphere.

The marine reserve surrounding Nujuma's island is a 2,500-island archipelago that has been biologically protected since Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 conservation commitments began. The coral health here is exceptional — this part of the Red Sea has not experienced the commercial diving traffic of more established destinations, and the biodiversity reflects that.

The Accommodation: Overwater and Beach Villas

Nujuma's 63 villas divide into overwater and beach categories. The overwater villas extend directly above the lagoon on stilts — glass-floor sections in the bathroom reveal the reef below; the private infinity pool appears to merge with the sea at the horizon; the sunrise view over the water from the villa terrace is the experience guests most frequently describe as the single best moment of their stay.

Beach villas position guests at the water's edge — sand underfoot, immediate reef access for snorkelling, and a slightly different sense of immersion in the landscape. Both categories are spacious by any standard — the smallest villa is approximately 120 square metres including outdoor areas. Materials throughout are natural — limestone, weathered timber, woven textiles — designed to feel continuous with the landscape rather than imposed upon it.

The Personal Host ('Kaimana') Model

The most discussed element of the Nujuma experience is the Kaimana — the personal host assigned at the beginning of every stay. This is not a standard concierge. The Kaimana handles arrivals, coordinates all dining reservations (in advance, based on preferences gathered before arrival), arranges marine experiences, manages transfers, and is reachable 24 hours for the duration of the stay. The same person.

The practical effect of this model: you do not need to repeat your preferences. The Kaimana learns how you take your coffee, your preference for early morning or late-morning breakfast, your diving certification level (which determines which reef experiences can be arranged), your interest in private fishing versus guided snorkelling versus simply reading on the deck. By Day 2, the stay feels genuinely personalised in a way that larger hotels — however exceptional — cannot fully replicate.

Marine Experiences: The Reef That Has Never Been Crowded

The marine biology of the Red Sea around Nujuma's island has been documented to include over 1,200 fish species and some of the healthiest coral coverage in the region. The resort assigns a resident marine biologist who leads private guided snorkelling and diving sessions for guests. Early morning is the recommended time — visibility exceeds 30 metres on most days, the water temperature is around 25–28°C, and the reef is quiet.

For certified divers, the drop-off beyond the reef edge descends to 40+ metres of open water — a dramatically different experience from the lagoon. Nujuma can arrange private cetacean-watching excursions (dolphins and occasionally humpback whales are sighted in the area), sunset dhow charters, and private island picnics on uninhabited nearby islands.

The Verdict: Who Should Book Nujuma vs St. Regis

Nujuma is the correct choice if: you want the most private Red Sea experience available; you value personalisation over amenity volume; you want a marine biologist-led reef encounter rather than a pool with a swim-up bar; and you are comfortable paying a significant premium for intimate scale.

The St. Regis Red Sea is the correct choice if: you want multiple restaurant options; you want a larger, more active spa programme; you are travelling with children and want kids club facilities; or you want the more recognisable brand name at a slightly lower entry price.

Both are genuinely outstanding. Nujuma is, by most measures, the most exclusive resort in Saudi Arabia — and arguably in the Middle East. For the right traveller, it is worth every riyal.

Nujuma — Common Questions

How much does Nujuma Ritz-Carlton Reserve cost per night?+

Nujuma rates start at approximately $2,500 per night for an overwater villa, rising to $6,000+ for premium categories and suite villas. The Reserve experience commands a significant premium over standard island resorts — the one-host-per-stay model and privacy justifies this for guests who can afford it.

How do you get to Nujuma Ritz-Carlton Reserve?+

Nujuma is accessible exclusively by seaplane or private yacht. Seaplane transfers depart from the mainland coast (King Abdullah Economic City, KAEC, or Yanbu) and take approximately 20–30 minutes. Transfers are arranged by the resort and coordinated with your arrival time. There is no road access.

What is the difference between Nujuma and St. Regis Red Sea?+

Nujuma (63 villas, one dedicated personal host per stay, protected marine reserve, ultra-intimate) is more exclusive and quieter. St. Regis (90 villas, Iridium Spa, multiple restaurants, butler service) is more amenity-rich and lively. Both are outstanding; Nujuma suits guests who prioritise absolute privacy and personalisation; St. Regis suits those who want world-class resort facilities alongside the private island experience.

Is Nujuma family-friendly?+

Yes — Nujuma can accommodate families and has villa configurations suitable for multi-room bookings. The lagoon waters are calm and suitable for children, and the resort can arrange age-appropriate marine experiences. However, the intimate scale and emphasis on quiet luxury makes it better suited to couples or small family groups rather than large families with young children who need extensive kids club facilities.
